Agrarian Utopia (Uruphong Raksasad, 2009)

There is a dark cloud that looms over the idyll of Agrarian Utopia. Despite the serene images of rolling fields, an endless sea of greens and the simple life that these farmers strive to have, there is a certain darkness that hangs over the heads. Raksasad would like us to believe that these people are living in a utopia, that despite the bitter and hard life that they are trying to live, they are fueled by their sense of community and the belief that their lives will eventually turn for the better.

Fiction or not, Agrarian Utopia is a powerful work of cinema. It gives us a hard look at the seemingly hopeless plight of these farmers, something that they share with our very own agrarian community, all hoping that someday they will own the lands that they have so desperately worked hard on.

The Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 18 December 1992, states that an enforced disappearance occurs when “persons are arrested, detained or abducted against their will or otherwise deprived of their liberty by officials of different branches or levels of Government, or by organized groups, or private individuals acting on behalf of, or with the support, direct or indirect, consent or acquiescence of the Government, followed by a refusal to disclose the fate or whereabouts of the persons concerned or a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of their liberty, which places such persons outside the protection of the law.”

Long weekend: Hindi lang BAKASYON ang ibig sabihin.

Bakit ba may long weekend? Kasi may natatapat na mga piyesta opisyal o mga holiday. Pero nalilimutan ng marami sa atin, at madalas ay nalilimita na lang sa pagbabakasyon, ang esensya ng pagdedeklara bilang walang pasok sa mga araw na ito. Ang mga araw ay idinedeklarang walang pasok para ipagdiwang ang mga natatanging panahong ito sa ating kasaysayan, kultura, relihiyon, atbp.

Ano bang meron sa “Araw ng mga Bayani”, tuwing huling Lunes ng Agosto? Sana naalala pa natin ang “Sigaw sa Pugadlawin”, na pinamunuan ng Supremo - Andres Bonifacio, na naging hudyat ng umpisa ng Rebolusyong 1896.

Sabagay, hindi naman maiiwasang maging ganito ang mentalidad ng mga Pinoy, dahil sa uri ng trabaho sa bansa - na dominado ng mga dayuhang korporasyon at ilang mayayamang Pilipino. Panahon na nila ito para makapagpahinga mula sa mapaniil na sistemang sahuran sa bansa. “OVERWORKED ka na, ngunit hanggang sa ngayon, UNDERPAID ka pa rin.”
